Mike House – YEG Me about climbing mountains and being a champion for kid’s health

He learned at an early age to go knocking on doors and he wasn’t afraid to make the big ask. His ask at the time was only for cookies mind you, but the early makings of his best skill set was being established.

We were so happy to get some time with Mike House. Mike is the president & CEO of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation in Edmonton.

Mike previously served as the assistant dean, development & stakeholder relations for the Alberta School of Business, University of Alberta. Working throughout Alberta, Mike has been a part of many noteworthy capital campaigns for a variety of organizations in health, education and social services, including STARS Air Ambulance, Canadian Cancer Society, Lakeland College and Discovery House Women’s Shelter in Calgary.

Prior to his direct work in the fundraising profession, Mike enjoyed an extensive and productive career as a senior marketing and communications leader in the arts and culture sector. He has worked in senior positions throughout the US and Canada at such organizations as the Edmonton Opera and The Citadel Theatre

in Edmonton, Alberta, Theatre Projects in Calgary and the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, PA.

His academic credentials include an MBA specializing in finance and an undergraduate business degree in marketing from the University of Alberta. Mike also holds a CFRE designation that is recognized internationally within the fundraising profession.

YEG Me some pies with Jamie Scott, owner of South Island Pie Co.

We sat down recently with Jamie Scott, the owner of the South Island Pie Company and learned all about his journey to Edmonton, the start of South Island Pies company and their new chapter of building the food business accelerator UpRoot Food.

Originally from the south island of New Zealand, Jamie – the pie man himself – travelled to Canada on his first OE (overseas experience). From the day he left NZ, he longed for the comforts of a hot, savoury, traditional NZ meat pie. Once settled in Edmonton with his Canadian wife, he realized there were no down-under-style meat pies to be found.

It was time to put that famous kiwi ingenuity to use and create his own homemade meat pies. After years of making meat pies for friends and family and fine tuning his recipes, the South Island Pie Co. came to life. Jamie wanted to share a little piece of NZ and his love of savoury pies with the fine folks of Edmonton – and that’s how South Island Pie Co. began!

Jamie is an avid mountain biker who loves to follow his rides up with a good craft beer. When he’s not making his savoury pies for his fellow fine Edmontonians, you can find him cheering on the All-Blacks or the Oilers, taking in one of our city’s markets, or brewing his own beer.

Rick LeLacheur – YEG Me about so many Edmonton things!

Host of the YEG Me podcast, Rob LeLacheur sat down with his dad Rick to discuss so many great Edmonton topics. Rick has had a front row seat or has been sitting at the table for many of Edmonton’s great events, organizations and companies.

He’s beginning his third year as team president of the BC Lions in 2020 bringing a wealth of business and professional sports experience to the role.

A native of Edmonton, Rick was formerly the president and CEO of the Edmonton Eskimos from 2002 to 2011. In that time, the Eskimos enjoyed two Grey Cup wins in 2003 and 2005 and hosted tremendously successful Grey Cup Festivals in 2002 and 2010. His duties in Edmonton also included serving as an alternate on the CFL Board of Governors as well as chairman of the CFL’s Audit Committee and a member of the league’s Executive Committee.

An accomplished business executive, Rick’s passion for sports dates back to his junior hockey days as a member of the Edmonton Oil Kings. When his playing days ended, he joined the family business Western Moving and Storage in 1967. He was named president in 1982 and served in that capacity until 1992 when the company was sold.

From 1992 to 1998, he served as president and CEO of Economic Development Edmonton (EDE). Skillfully building a vast network of influential business owners and volunteers, he played a critical role in Edmonton’s winning bid to host the incredibly successful 2001 World Championships in Athletics.

Rick’s highly-respected and influential business practices have been sought out numerous companies and an organizations. As a result, he’s spent time on a number of boards including a six-year term as chairman of Alberta’s Workers Compensation Board (WCB), Chair of Horse Racing Alberta and six years on the board of Travel Alberta, including a two-year term as chair.

He has also served on the boards of the Alberta Economic Development Authority, TELUS Corporation, Allied Van Lines Ltd and Prairie Land Corporation.
